“I can’t believe I’m having trouble with this!” Takuya shouted.” “I mean, how hard is it to think of a place to go on a date?!”
Junpei sighed. He and Takuya were over at his house pondering that very situation. Takuya claimed that it was only because Shinya would bother him about it otherwise, but Junpei thought that the real reason was because Takuya needed his help.
Not that he was going to mention that. Takuya was stubborn, so while he would help, he’d wait until Takuya actually asked for his suggestions before saying anything.
At least, that’s what he thought an hour ago. Now? Junpei was willing to just blurt out the first thing that came to his mind. But that probably wouldn’t help Takuya, so he needed to actually think of something. “Well, what does she like? You need to think about that if you want to come up with a decent idea.”
Takuya rubbed his chin, thinking deeply for a moment. “Well, I know she likes photography and art, and I guess there’s those romance movies a lot of girls like.”
Junpei rolled his eyes. Obviously Takuya hadn’t given much thought to this before. “Well, then go to the museum with her or go see one of those movies.” There, problem solved.
Takuya looked like he was about to tear out his hair. “But those will bore me to death! If I take her there, she’ll think I asked her out to try to get into her pants!”
Junpei sighed. “If that’s all you’re trying to do with a date, it’ll seem that way no matter where you take her.”
Takuya glared at her. “That’s not why I want to ask her out!”
Junpei chuckled. “Well that’s good. You’re already in a decent position for getting her to say yes. But why do you want to ask her out?”
Takuya didn’t say anything for a moment. “I really like her,” he answered. “And I want to get to know her better.”
Junpei nodded. “Alright, so you only know her a little bit then, right?”
Takuya nodded, but he didn’t say anything.
“So just ask her to hang out around a mall or park, then go to a restaurant for dinner,” Junpei said.
“But where should we go then?” Takuya asked. “Most good restaurants need reservations and cost too much money!”
Junpei sighed and shook his head. “Why don’t you go to Izumi’s parents place? It isn’t’ like they’ll reject one of us, and they like giving discounts to her friends.”
“But that’ll make it seem like I’m cheap!” Takuya exclaimed.
“Takuya, you’re an unemployed middle school student. I’m sure she’ll understand that you don’t have much money. Besides, your other choice is McDonalds.”
Takuya’s face went white. “Izumi’s place it is then.”
Junpei smiled, glad that the problem was finally solved. He was happy for his friend, but Takuya was panicking more about his first date than Junpei thought he would.
“Thanks man,” Takuya said.
Junpei shook his head. “It’s no problem Takuya,” Junpei said. “I know you’d do the same for me.”
Takuya laughed. “Like you’d nee my help. How many girls were willing to go out with you? Izumi, Chiaki, and even Katou-san I think.”
Junpei blushed. “That’s not the point!” While he had gone out with all three of the girls Takuya mentioned, Izumi was the only one he’d been out with more than once. Then again, the only reason he was even able to go out with Chiaki and Juri in the first place was because Izumi insisted on “playing the field” for a bit before moving into a serious relationship. He was a little hurt when she told him that, but her track record with other guys seemed to be like his with other girls.
Takuya laughed again. “Sure buddy.”
Junpei laughed also. “So, when are you going to ask her out?”
Takuya smiled. “When I see her at school tomorrow. I kinda don’t know her e-mail or phone number.”
“Better make sure you get it after making the plans for the date.”
“Don’t worry about it; I’m not going to be that much of an idiot.”
.o0o.
It was Monday afternoon when Junpei got a phone call from Izumi. “Hey,” he said, glad to hear from her. They hadn’t spoken to each other since the last week.
“Hey Junpei,” Izumi began. “You know how I suggested that we stay open to seeing other people for a bit?”
“Yeah,” Junpei said, slightly worried. Did she find someone else she liked enough to go into an actual relationship with?
“I’m done with it,” Izumi said, and Junpei’s throat tightened up. “Want to go out this weekend?”
Junpei pulled the phone away from his mouth and let out a sigh. Once he put it back in place he smiled. “Yes!” He was forcing himself to not jump up and down in happiness.
He heard Izumi giggle on the other end. “Cool. Do you mind if we made it a double date though? My friend Hikari says a guy she knows asked her out. She likes him, but she’s kinda worried that he just wants to try to get her to have sex with him, so she wants some moral support.”
Junpei laughed. “Don’t worry Izumi. Hikari doesn’t have to worry about that from Takuya, but I don’t mind the double date at all.” Then he frowned. “Although Takuya might want to change his date plans then, it’ll be kind of weird for you going on a date at your family’s restaurant.”
Izumi laughed. “Yeah, that would be odd, to say the least. You going to tell Takuya that, or should I mention it to him when I see him later today. At least I know why he wanted to meet me at a clothing store though.”
“Wow… he wants to buy new clothes for this? He must really like Hikari.”
Izumi giggled. “You’ll be sure to set a good example for him, right?”
“Yeah. You have nothing to worry about. He’s not going to be embarrassing her while I’m there. See you this weekend!”
