Here's my Yamato and Mimi gen for [livejournal.com profile] digifriendship. Not my best, but considering there's been nothing this last year...

Title: Fault
Fandom: Digimon Adventure/Adventure 02
Genre: Gen
Characters: Yamato and Mimi
Disclaimer: Digimon is owned by Bandai and the Digimon Adventure anime series are made by Toei.

It had been four years since they had defeated Belai Vamdemon, and the anniversary celebration at Digitamamon’s newly opened beach resort was in full swing.

Mimi looked around at all of the chosen from around the world, searching for a certain someone. Everyone from her old team that talked to her lately had only one topic to speak about… Yamato and Sora’s relationship troubles. Mimi had no idea what was behind it, but she wasn’t about to let one of her best friends stay unhappy, which meant figuring out the problem at its most likely source.

Mimi finally spotted Yamato alone by the refreshments, some type of drink in his hand. She headed over towards him. “You seem kinda upset,” Mimi said once she got close enough.

Yamato didn’t say anything in response.

Mimi pouted. “Hey! Don’t’ ignore someone who’s talking to you!”

“Go away.”

Mimi glared at him, partly hoping that some of his blood would boil under it. She grabbed Yamato by the arm and tried to drag him to the rest of the party, but only ended up falling to the ground when he pulled his arm away from her. She shot her glare back at him again. “Stop acting like you did when we were eleven!”

Mimi thought she saw Yamato’s eyebrow twitch, but other then that he didn’t have any visible reaction. “Everything’s fine,” he said after a moment. “Just leave me alone already!”

Mimi really wanted to smack Yamato, yet for some reason she couldn’t fathom, didn’t. “If everything were fine you would be over there having a good time with Sora and the rest of your friends!” She pointed across the room to the girl in question, who was talking with both Koushiro and Noriko.

They didn’t seem to notice her pointing at them, but that didn’t matter.

Yamato just turned and walked away from the party.

Mimi clenched her fists and she probably made a growling sound, since Miyako and Hikari were looking over at her like she was an angry pit bull.

Mimi took a deep breath. Obviously what she was trying wasn’t working, but the only options that she could think of were to give up or to stupidly follow Yamato.

Two seconds later, and Mimi walked away from the party. It took her a few minutes, but she finally found Yamato staring at the ocean from the unused part of the beach.

Before she even said anything, she heard him sigh. “You just aren’t going to give up, are you?”

“Nope!” It looked like she was finally getting somewhere. “Now are you finally going to tell me why you’ve been distant from Sora lately?”

Yamato turned around, and Mimi’s eyes instantly darted to the small black jewelry box in his hand. “I’m… just having trouble thinking of how to ask.”

This time Mimi did hit Yamato, her palm colliding with the young man’s cheek.
“You idiot, everyone’s been thinking you and Sora are breaking up, and the problem is you can’t propose flashy enough!?”

Yamato didn’t say anything, looking over at her in shock.

Mimi sighed. “Listen, a lot of girl’s would like a rock star like you –”

“-band broke up,” Yamato interjected.

“-to propose on stage with pyrotechnics or something flashy,” Mimi finished without pausing for what he said. “Sora? She won’t care beyond you proposing to her.”

Yamato sighed. “I guess you’re right…”

Mimi blinked, and then leaned over to get a better look at him. “That’s not all that’s bothering you, is it?”

Yamato shook his head and turned away, not saying anything.

Mimi thought that she’d need to yell at or hit him again, but before she needed to do that, he spoke. “It’s just my band’s gone now. I know it’s stupid, but I always saw myself staying with the band. Now that it’s gone…”

“Well, why don’t you start a new band?” Mimi asked.

Yamato laughed and turned around. “The band broke up because of how often Gabumon and I were needed on the battlefield recently. I don’t see that changing soon.”

Mimi rolled her eyes. At least Takeru didn’t seem to have his brother’s problems; she didn’t think Miyako or Hikari would be able to deal with this. “Well, what else do you like doing?”

Yamato didn’t say anything, he just looked at her. After a few moments, he shook his head. “No idea.”

“What about cooking?” You’re good at that.” She wasn’t too bad at that herself, maybe they could compare recipes someday.

“Well, I only learned how to do that because Dad was never home early enough to cook.”

Mimi pouted. What other things did he like? Other than music and cooking, she had no idea.

The two of them stood in silence for a bit. “What did you want to be when you were a kid?” Maybe there would be an answer there.

“A rock star.” Or not.

Mimi huffed and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Besides that.”

“… I don’t really remember anything?” Yamato said, bringing his hand up to his chin. “Well, there was being an anime hero, but that already kinda already happened, minus the anime.”

Mimi giggled, but it seemed like she was still going about this wrong. “What did you like when you were a kid?”

“Video games, anime, and all the normal kid stuff,” he answered. “But now that I think about it, I did like finding new places when were brought to the Digital World for the first time. If Takeru wasn’t with us that time, I probably would’ve jumped at the chance to make the map of File Island.”

“You probably would’ve done a better job of it.”

Yamato laughed. “That’s certainly true.”

Something suddenly came to Mimi’s mind. “Why don’t you join one of those exploration teams? Even if we have a map from the D3s, we still don’t know much about certain areas.”

Yamato shook his head. “With teams all over the world already doing that, they’ll be done pretty fast. In a couple of years, at most.”

Mimi leaned back a bit and looked up at the sky and the comforting lights twinkling in the night. Her eyes widened. “If the Digital World is taken, then why not try space?” She asked, focusing her attention on him again.

Yamato looked at her like she had a third leg… growing out of her forehead. “You crazy!?”

“It was just a suggestion!”

Yamato sighed, before he burst out laughing. “Thanks, but I’m not sure about that.” He started walking back towards the party. “See you later.”

Mimi waited for a bit before following him.

Years later, when they spoke about their careers, Yamato claimed his was Mimi’s fault to everyone who asked.

Nice one! I love the epilogue-justification, and the consequences of Yamato's job as a Chosen on his relationship with his band was a nice thing to see. I just think you could have run this through the spell check to catch the typos in them. There aren't a lot, but they're pretty easy to catch.

Thanks. I threw it through spell check can't believe I forgot to do that, but it only came up with one that was a typo. Which one's were you talking about?

“What about cooking? You’re good at that.”

Mostly just misplaced apostrophes and quotation marks.
