Title: Reclaiming the Devil
Characters: Nanami and Kurata
Rating: T
Summary: Nanami has orders from her new employer that need to be carried out. Written for the
digifriendship challenge and part of the Broken Dreams universe with minimal spoilers for the main fic.
For the first time in three years, Nanami cared about something other than being bored. The young woman looked around the dense forest. He was hiding here, she was sure of it.
“Why are we here?” a young sounding voice asked from down around her feet.
Nanami pouted and looked down at the small green caterpillar digimon scurrying around her. “We need to find him, remember Wormmon?”
Wormmon let out a small squeal at that. “But I don’t want to find the crazy guy again! He’ll just hurt us like before!”
Nanami shook her head. Her partner had a good reason to be concerned about him, considering what had happened to her last time…
… but she wasn’t going to let it happen again. Her partner was going to stay safe. She was going to make sure of that.
But even with her desire to do that, Kurata still needed to be found. Her new employer demanded it, and Nanami wasn’t going to disappoint her. Not with how the world was now, and how she was allowed to stay with her partner despite that anyone with DATS would’ve taken her away without a second thought. Considering what she had agreed to three years ago, it was a wonder Wormmon still wanted anything to do with her…
Nanami bent down and scooped Wrommon up in her arms. The small digimon looked up at her and blinked. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you, I promise.”
Wormmon smiled, and Nanami started walking through the forest. The two of them still had a job to do, and she was going to be sure that they did it.
The young woman felt Wormmon tense up in her arms after a few minutes. She quickly looked around. “What’s wrong?” Being human again meant that she couldn’t sense danger as well as she used to.
It was the only thing about being a bio-hybrid that she missed.
“Something’s coming!” Wormmon shouted as she leapt out of Nanami’s arms. The small digimon’s body was still tense and she was looking around in every direction.
Nanami took the hint and grabbed her digivice. It had been… donated by a former agent of DATS Europe. A yellowish-white digisoul appeared around her hand, but she waited. For all she knew, this could be nothing.
Of course, it was probably something horrible, but she still needed to be sure.
It wasn’t long before a large red-skinned dinosaur digimon, either a Growmon or a Tyranomon (Nanami didn’t remember or care which) emerged from the forest. It took one look at the tow of them and charged with a crazed look in its eyes.
Nanami quickly slammed her hand down on the top of the digivice. “Digisoul Charge!” Light shot out of the digivice and enveloped Wormmon.
Wormmon started growing. “Wormmon Evolve!” The caterpillar’s body changed into that of a serpent wearing white armor with wings coming out of its head. “Coatlmon!”
Coatlmon flew forward and quickly fired a wave of energy from her mouth at the attacking digimon.
The digimon howled in pain as the energy enveloped its body. It recovered quickly enough though and blasted Coatlmon with a ball of fire from its mouth.
The winged serpent dodged the blast, the flames setting a nearby tree on fire.
Nanami pouted as she watched the dinosaur digimon fire blast after blast of flame at her partner, even as Coatlmon managed to dodge each attack. As it was, the flames were still setting the surrounding trees on fire. She doubted Kurata would think much about a battle in the middle of a forest, but at the rate things were going, some unwanted attention would be eventually be drawn here.
Nanami didn’t feel like dealing with DATS at the moment.
She wasn’t worried about Coatlmon. She had the utmost confidence in her partner.
They had once shared the same body after all.
The dinosaur digimon suddenly charged forward, tackling Coatlmon to the ground. Nanami screamed out her partner’s name, her heart suddenly slamming against her chest. She clenched her fist. Her partner couldn’t lose this!
Coaltmon wrapped her body around the dinosaur digimon and shot out another freezing blast of energy. The digimon howled as it struggled against her grip.
“Go for the neck!” Nanami ordered.
Coatlmon didn’t answer her, but opened her jaws and snapped forward, sinking her teeth into the other digimon’s neck, drawing blood.
Coatlmon’s captured prey howled and attempted to shake her off, but to no success. It wasn’t long before the dinosaur fell limply to the ground and dissolved into data, leaving nothing but a striped digiegg behind.
Coatlmon panted, but the female serpent had a smile on her face. She headed back over to Nanami. “You’re okay, right?”
Nanami nodded, placing her hand on her partner’s forehead. “Good job.”
Coatlmon began glowing white, before she shrunk and devolved back into Wormmon. The small digimon immediately leaped into Nanami’s now waiting arms.
Suddenly there was the sound of hands clapping. “I agree! The way you took out my altered Tyranomon was simply awe inspiring.”
Nanami quickly spun around to see Kurata standing behind her. The professor looked like he had seen much better days. His cheek bones were prominently visible on his face and his tattered lab coat managed to somehow completely cover his frame. She thought that he was probably much skinnier than he had been a couple of years ago. “It’s nice to see you again, Professor.”
Kurata laughed. “I really doubt that anyone looking for me thinks of it as ‘nice’, Nanami. What are you here for? Want to know about my bio-hybrid technology to get the power you used to have back? Really, I though screwing Professor Norstein would keep you occupied for quite a while.”
Wormmon tensed up in Nanami’s arms, and the young woman patted her on the head to comfort her even as she glared at Kurata. “No, but my current employer is interested in it.”
Kurata looked slightly interested in this. “Oohh… does this employer have a name?”
Nanami’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Yes, but first off, she has an offer for you. She wants the knowledge on how to create bio-hybrids---”
“Why should I give that up?” Kurata asked. “That takes out my chances at this strange new world we now find ourselves in.”
“Because without funding, your chances at taking over this world are next to nothing. As it is, she’s interested in using the technology for keeping people alive… like what you were planning to do with Relena Norstein.”
“Few people know about that,” Kurata said, any and all madness seemingly gone form his voice. “Who gives you your paycheck? And why does he need me and not just my research?”
“DATS destroyed most of it. As it is now, Daimon Masaru is probably close to finding you as we speak,” Nanami said. “If you want a chance at revenge, you should take my offer.”
It took a few moments. “Fine,” Kurata said. “I’ll hear what this employer of yours has to say.”
Nanami smiled even as Wormmon shivered in her arms.
It looked like her mission was a success.
